Millennium Greenway Friends

Tell me more about the Friends

Formed in 2000 on the opening of the Millennium Greenway, we are an independent group of volunteers of varying ages who very much care about the environment and enjoy working towards maintaining and improving this important green corridor which connects the urban centre of Chester with the countryside.

What kind of work do you do?

We work helping the Sustrans warden with maintenance e.g. pruning, planting, litter picking and removal of fly tipped rubbish. We also undertake projects. These have included a wildlife pond (established in an area which was previously a fly tip) and a dog splash for our four legged friends. We have put in trees and shrubs (including some donated in remembrance), planted plants and hundreds of bulbs which have now naturalised. Numerous bird nesting boxes have also been put up in various suitable locations.

How often and for how long do you work?

We have monthly workdays which last for 1 ½ - 2 hours on a Saturday morning with very occasional extra mid-week times too. We are grateful to those who can attend the extra days but there is no obligation to do so.

Do I have to come to every workday?

How often you come is entirely up to you. As is the length of time you can spare to stay. Again there is never an obligation. If you find you cannot join a particular workday you will be made to feel just as welcome when you have more time and return at a later date.

What experience do I need?

No previous experience is necessary. Tools are provided together with instructions on the tasks you will be asked to carry out.  Most of the tasks are quite simple. If you prefer not to undertake any of the occasional heavy work which has to be done e.g. tree planting, you have only to mention this and a lighter task will be found for you. You will be working alongside other members and will be able to set your own pace.

How will I know the dates of workdays and the place to meet?

Details can be found on the home page of this website under the Latest News heading. Once we have your email address we will send you a monthly email giving the information you require. Details will also be published on the Millennium Greenway notice posts and in local shops and libraries. Rarely have we had to cancel a workday (the last time was when the snow was too deep to work) but in such a case you will again be notified by email. Alternatively you can make contact via: karen@millenniumgreenwayfriends.org.uk  or mobile: 07804225188.

Can children join the Friends

Children are welcome to attend the workdays, however, this is on the express understanding that they will be directly and suitably supervised by the responsible adult who accompanies them.

What should I wear/bring?

Old clothes

Gardening gloves if you have them (we do have plenty of spares)

Stout footwear or, if you prefer, wellies in wet weather

A drink

Garden trowel or small hand fork if you would like to use a personal one but please mark with your name (again we have plenty spare ones).
